It is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling, creating absolutely no emissions. The passenger cars operate on a counter balance system, using water as its only motive power. The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is still an integral mode of transport for the two communities.
